What are User Roles & Capabilities?
User roles and capabilities in WordPress define what actions different users can perform on a site. Roles such as Author, Editor, and Administrator each have specific permissions, like creating, editing, or managing content. In Refoundry, access to certain block settings is restricted based on these roles, ensuring only users with the appropriate capabilities can modify advanced settings. For more information, you can refer to the WordPress User Roles documentation.
How it Works
In WordPress, user roles determine what actions a user can perform within the site. Each role comes with a predefined set of capabilities, which are permissions that grant or restrict access to various features and settings. Common roles include:
Administrator: Has full access to all site features, including theme settings, plugins, and content management.
Editor: Can manage and publish all posts, including those by other users, but has no access to site settings.
Author: Can create, edit, and publish their own posts, but cannot edit others’ content or change site settings.
Contributor: Can write and edit their own posts but cannot publish them.
Subscriber: Can only manage their profile and read content.
These roles are essential for managing team workflows and ensuring only users with appropriate access can modify content or settings. For more details, visit the WordPress User Roles documentation.
Refoundry and User Roles
Refoundry leverages the Administrator, Editor, and Author roles to safeguard certain block settings. By restricting access to specific features, Refoundry allows website owners to control who can edit advanced block settings, providing an extra layer of security and control over the site’s layout and design. This is especially useful if you have multiple people editing the site, and want to prevent accidental changes that would negatively impact the look, feel, and consistency of your pages.
Administrator
The Administrator role in WordPress is the highest level of access, granting full control over all site features and settings. Administrators can manage everything from themes and plugins to user accounts and content. They have the ability to create, edit, and delete any content, configure site settings, and assign roles to other users.
In Refoundry, Administrators have full access to all block settings, allowing them to modify advanced features, layouts, and design elements without restriction. This level of access is designed to give complete control over the site’s customization and functionality.
Editor
The Editor role in WordPress allows users to manage and publish all content, including posts and pages created by other users. Editors have full control over content management, but they cannot access site-wide settings, themes, or plugins.
In Refoundry, Editors can modify content and layouts but are restricted from accessing any settings inside the Settings Tab of blocks. This setup is ideal for users who need control over design and layout but should not have access to advanced block settings or site configurations, ensuring that more technical aspects remain protected.
Author
The Author role in WordPress allows users to create, edit, and publish their own content but does not grant them access to manage other users’ posts or site-wide settings. Authors have limited control, making them suitable for managing personal content without affecting the broader site configuration.
In Refoundry, Authors are restricted from accessing block settings in both the Settings Tab and the Layout Tab. They only have access to the Design Tab, which allows them to manage content and modify basic design settings related to that content. This setup is ideal for users who need to manage and style their content without the ability to change advanced settings or adjust the site’s layout, maintaining a controlled and consistent design structure.
